2. History of Gamification

The term gamification has gone a … not so long way. However, the context of gamification did exist since a century ago. Here is a brief timeline of gamification:

  • 1912 – Toys in Cracker Jack Boxes
    • An American snack packaged with a price of nominal value inside
  • 1980 – British Legends
    • A text-based game played using a TELNET program
  • 1980 to Present
  • 2002 to Present
    • Serious Games Initiative
    • Simulating battlefield for the military
    • Games for Change
      • Social impact games
      • Teaching of systematic impact thinking
  • 2003 – Conundra
  • 2007 – Bunchball
  • 2010
  • 2011 (big.do/2011graphic)
    • $25M in venture funding investments to gamification
    • 8 books published on gamification
    • 50% of organizations that manage innovation processes will gamify those processes by 2015
    • 70% of Global 2000 organizations will have at least 1 gamified application by 2014
    • $2.8 billion in direct spending on gamification by 2015
