35. Social Good Applications

Gamification for social good are mainly in 4 categories (not all inclusive):

  • Health & Wellness
  • Energy & Environment
  • Education
  • Government

Example (Health & Wellness): Zamzee from HopeLab

  • HopeLab is a non-profit that uses games and game-like systems for better health outcomes
  • Serious games for cancer patient recovery
  • Zamzee is a small accelerometer that measures physical fitness activity (e.g. number of steps taken when walking up steps)
  • Focus in on the problem of obesity and sedentary lifestyles among low income communities, especially young people
  • Earn points, unlock badges, level up and win rewards
  • Similar to Nike+ and FitBit

  • Allow people to overcome illness and motivate them around health challenges using gamification
  • More behaviorist kind of gamification and more game-based framework

  • Provides reports on amount of  energy used in the house and the trend (feedback mechanism for friendly competition, comparing with neighbors and an average person)
  • Users peer pressure to get people to engage in new behaviors using less electricity
